Halifax Organ Academy

HOA Logo

The Halifax Organ Academy (HOA for short) was set up in 2011 to

  • Be a centre of excellence for the organ in Calderdale and West Yorkshire
  • Provide tuition and support for organists, raising the standard of playing and the number of good players in the locality
  • Encourage the take up of the organ – especially amongst young people

The Academy offers

  • Regular organ days, comprising master classes, seminars, performances, lecture recitals
  • Provision of workshops for school children
  • Bursaries and scholarships
  • Help with finding an organ teacher

The Academy is based at Halifax Minster, where the first master class, led by Anne Marsden Thomas, was held in September 2011. Events are also held at a number of other locations in the region, including the Victoria Theatre, HalifaxBrighouse Parish Church, and St Jude’s Church, Halifax. Classes and workshops are often held in conjunction with the RCO Academy Organ  School. For organ students in the south and west of England, the Lyme Regis Organ School offers excellent programmes, tuition and more.

  1. I have noticed that the link to Brighouse Parish Church on your website does not function because the address is incorrect.

    The correct address is: http://www.stmartinsbrighouse.org.uk

  2. Interested in the organ for a good home.
    Thank you.

  3. This might not be anything that you can help with but I wondered if any of your pupils needed practice in other churches and would like to earn a little money as well,
Our benefice of two churches, each with a lovely organ, is short of an organist. We did have an excellent one but he has moved to Lancashire to be near his family so we are now using CD’s, which are better then nothing but nowhere near as good as the real thing!
I hope this is something which could be mutually beneficial. Kind Regards. Marjorie

I am looking for a teacher to see me through the transition from piano to organ. I have played before but that was 22 years ago. I never stopped playing the piano though and have reached a high standard. I am currently looking for an instrument to practice on. It is difficult nowadays with buildings locked most of the time. It is the reason why I stopped playing.
